Orientalizing Ionian oinochoe, called the
"Levy Oinochoe" Circa 640-630 BC Terra
cotta H 39.5 cm, E 658 Its size and the refinement of its
wrap-around decoration make the "Levy Oinochoe" a masterpiece
of the Orientalizing production that is known as the "Wild
Goat Style," because of the frequent depiction of these animals.
The shape, imitating metallic models, is highlighted by a delicate
ivory-toned slip upon which unfolds a regular succession of friezes,
enlivened by the colouring of the animals' coats and the whimsical
infilling of ornamental motifs. Long considered as proper to the
isle of Rhodes, the "Wild Goat Style" flourished in fact
throughout several Ionian cities, Miletus foremost. |
